Veterinary Clinical Lab

This laboratory course practices the use of diagnostic laboratory procedures in the field of hematology, blood chemistries, urinalysis, and cytology. Laboratory sessions emphasize the performance of analytical procedures commonly used in veterinary medicine.

Vet Clinical Lab Techniques

This course examines the use of diagnostic laboratory procedures in the field of hematology, blood chemistries, urinalysis, and cytology. Lectures will make use of online work in addition to in person and will cover the theories on which the tests are based and the correlation of the laboratory results with pathological conditions. The collection, handling, and storage of laboratory specimens and general laboratory management procedures including safety and quality control, will be discussed.

Conservation & Vet Med/Belize

This course provides an introduction to the wildlife of Belize, selected wildlife conservation projects in Belize, and the role of veterinary professionals in these conservation efforts. The course also provides exposure to the practice of veterinary medicine in Belize as it relates to pet and farm animal species. Additionally, students will develop an awareness of cultural diversity as they learn about the culture and history of Belize. Students will participate remotely in virtual experiences provided by the Center for Engaged Learning Abroad (C.E.L.A.) in Belize.

This course focuses on common domestic animals and their behavior. The interaction of the hormonal and physiological factors in animal behavior is also discussed. Ethological principles and methods are examined in lecture. The recognition of normal versus abnormal animal behavior and prevention of behavior problems are emphasized. Animal learning theories and behavior modification techniques are also covered. An introduction to career options in animal behavior and professional organizations and publications is also included.

Genetics

This course covers mendelian and non-mendelian genetics, molecular genetics, genetic mapping, developmental and population genetics. Emphasis on genetics in animal models.

Equine Behavior & Learning

This course provides an understanding of the behavioral mechanisms involved with human and horse interaction and a model of training based on equine behavior, ecology and learning theory. The welfare consequences of training and competing with horses involved in different disciplines are discussed. This course will help you to better understand how the study of equine behavior theory informs successful behavioral modification or training.
