Sem In Multicul Educ

This course provides a forum for the discussion and analysis of conceptual, theoretical, and practical links between multicultural education and students' primary research interests in other fields of study (language policy, bilingualism, teacher education, the education of bicultural students, curriculum, and pedagogy, among others).

S-Review of the Literature

In this course we will talk about what makes a good review for different purposes, how to conduct a rigorous and systematic review, how to analyze and synthesize research studies and how to write a coherent and compelling review. We will read about and talk through some of the ethical considerations involved in the process of writing and publishing a review. Another objective will be to help students prepare for the literature reviews that are part of their comprehensive exams, research proposals and dissertations.

Soc Issues Child & Young Lit

This course creates a space for pre-K to grade 12 teachers, literacy coaches, and researchers of languages, literacies, and literatures to refine and fortify their critical multicultural reading of social issues in children's and young adult literature. We will consider the social issues of family, linguistic, and cultural diversity; gender, sexuality, class, and race; war and peace, and the like. Participants will select and analyze relevant social issues or design an action plan based on their new understandings of critical teaching literature.
