S-PCAR Sensing & Warning Tech

This seminar provides an introduction to the some of the sensors and technologies being investigated in the Paros Center for Atmospheric Research (PCAR) for observing, forecasting, and warning against tornadoes, flash floods, wild fires, and other atmospheric and airborne hazards. We survey current and emerging global weather radar and infrasound sensing networks, how sensors are integrated into warning systems to keep the public safe, and the computational and communication technologies underlying these systems. No prior experience with these technologies is assumed in the course.

Western Thought to 1600

This course covers the origins of Western Civilization in the Mediterranean world and its development in Europe to the Protestant Reformation. It explores the achievements and disasters of the ancient world: democracy, republicanism, art, architecture, philosophy, literature, war, slavery, and despotism. It also explores Europe after the fall of the Roman Republic: Christianity, feudalism, plague, exploration, conquest, renaissance, and reformation. (Gen.Ed. HS)
