The web has become a large and complex area for application development. Access to an abundance of open source languages, libraries, and frameworks has led to the quick and easy construction of a variety of applications with several moving parts working in coordination to present to the user the illusion of a single program. In reality, web applications are extremely difficult to get right.

This course will introduce NLP methods and applications, such as text classification, sentiment analysis, machine translation, and other applications to identify and use the meaning of text. During the course, students will (1) learn fundamental methods and algorithms for NLP; (2) become familiar with key facts about human language that motivate them, and help practitioners know what problems are possible to solve; and (3) complete a series of hands-on projects to use, implement, experiment with, and improve NLP tools. This course counts as a CS Elective for the CS Major (BA or BS).

An inquiry into the rules governing the representation of war in the late-19th, 20th, and 21st century, this course will focus on a variety of international conflicts, with particular attention to the wide variety of ways in which the experience of war is communicated to non-combatants: film, journalism, memoir, narrative, photography, poetry, etc. The history of U.S. involvement in these recent wars, as well as those which are on-going, will be a central focus of our course. In this course, we will investigate how incomes are distributed in our society, why income inequality has risen so dramatically in recent years, and what public policy tools exist to counter inequality increases. The course will consider various normative approaches to answering the following question: should we care about inequality?
