Psychology of Diversity

This course provides a deep investigation into issues of diversity from a psychological perspective, including how we can understand both the value of and the threats to diversity with regard to gender, race, age, weight, and more. We will review theory and research from social psychology that provides insight into what we understand about intergroup relations and diversity. We will also consider historical and systemic forces that impact our attitudes and approaches to addressing diversity.

Philosophy of Time

Is time real? If so, are the past and the future as real as the present?  Do they even exist? And how should we understand time anyway? Is it independent of things within it? Could there be time without change? Time seems linear, and also to have an intrinsic direction or “arrow”? But does it have to be this way? It’s often said that time passes, but what does this mean? How fast does it pass? In what sense is time “open” in the future? Is time travel possible?

Climate Justice

(Offered as ENST-272and SOCI-272) Climate Justice Now is an innovative course that takes students off campus and into the community to actively engage with work that people and organizations are doing to advance climate justice in Massachusetts and beyond. The course combines study of the social science of climate change mitigation with real-world examples to facilitate a deeper understanding of the many ways people are, and each of us can, contribute to making the planet more livable for current and future generations.

Creative Nonfiction

This course explores the questions at the heart of creative nonfiction: What does it mean to tell a “true” story? And what does it mean to tell a true story “creatively”? A deep dive into essay, memoir, and genres of nonfiction that have yet to be named will allow us to form our own definitions of creative nonfiction. Through workshops that will encourage exploration, experimentation, and vulnerability, we will develop our own personal practices for writing from life.
