Drawing on sociolinguistic, narrative and historical studies, we explore how sociocultural dimensions of bilingualism and biculturalism are researched. Also, sociopolitical theories are examined that account for historical responses to educating bilinguals.

This course will provide advanced students in the areas of educational research, psychometrics, and statistics with techniques for computer programming, data analysis, parameter estimation and conducting research using Monte Carlo simulations.

This course focuses on the integration of SJE as pedagogy and SJE as content to promote youth engagement and transformative education across learning environments. Its purpose is to help students develop a combination of historical, theoretical, conceptual, scientific, and pedagogical foundation for SJE in youth-based settings such as schools and community based organizations.

This course addresses the theory, roles, and functions of professional school psychology in relation to student learning in school settings.

Nature of understanding and sense making in science and mathematics, various theories of learning, process vs. content goals, social vs. cognitive views of learning, and inquiry vs. directed teaching methods.

Theory of mental tests beginning with the classical test theory model and including such topics as reliability, validity, item analysis and test development.

The course will apprentice new doctoral students to the practices in which researchers interested in the intersection among the fields of language, literacy, and culture approach the scholarly activities of second language, bilingualism, world languages, reading, and writing research.

This course will provide a basic introduction to arts-based research methods in the social sciences for students already familiar with qualitative methods, but eager to explore different ways of conducting interdisciplinary research. Students will develop an understanding of the theoretical foundations of arts-based research and will be able to critically assess the appropriate application of arts-based work. Students will conduct two course projects: The first project will be the creation of a folio of visual and performative artistic explorations of their existing body of qualitative data.

The purpose of this course is to allow graduate students to apply research skills and knowledge to a research project in the area of higher education.
