FYS-Modeling&Data Storytelling

The objective of this course is to help you understand: 1. Why model 2. How to be a model thinker. We will go through some important models in various disciplines in the first half of semester, roughly speaking. For the rest of the semester, you will pick one of those models and apply it in any questions of your interest as an individual project or group project.

This course will provide a brief introduction or R software and how scientists, engineers and social scientists can use it to describe data. The main focuses of this course will be on applying the use of R software to describe data, develop soft skills working in a team group, and develop time management skill working in a group.

This course is directed to undergraduate STEM students pursuing a career or interested in the energy sector. It expands the discussion about ?clean energy? and sheds light in the multidisciplinary challenges of developing sustainable and equitable power systems. Throughout the course, students will be introduced to the operational structure of the power system as well as its side effects, culminating in a discussion about justice in the electric grid.

Students will learn about the real world challenges associated with providing engineering services in a developing world context. Specific topics will include cultural intelligence, negotiation and conflict resolution in different cultural contexts, and challenges associated with labor and material availability in emerging economies.
