Pavement Design

Design procedures for flexible highway pavement structures including AASHTO and the Asphalt Institute methods; determination of design parameters for mixed traffic, materials, and performance characterization; reliability of design. Design project, a written engineering report and oral presentation. Prerequisites: CE-ENGIN 310, 320.

ST- Offshore Structures

An introduction to the analysis and design of offshore structures with a strong emphasis on structures for renewable energy applications, especially offshore wind energy. Environmental condition modeling, loads analysis and design standards are covered as well.

ST-Envir Engin Microbiology

This course will explore fundamental and applied aspects microbiology as related to environmental engineering. In the environment, microorganisms function as both agents of treatment and elements requiring monitoring and control. Students will learn the basics of microbiology so that they can design robust systems that can remediate environmental pollutants and control pathogen persistence in the natural and engineered environments.

Water and Wastewater Systems

Introduction to the design of water and wastewater systems. Topics include water supply, design of transmission and distribution systems, drinking water treatment, wastewater collection and design of sanitary sewers, and wastewater treatment systems. Prerequisite: CE-ENGIN 357 and CE-ENGIN 370.

GIS for Engineers

Introduction to fundamental principles and concepts necessary to carry out meaningful and appropriate geographic analysis with geographic information science (GIS). Reinforcement of key issues in GIS such as geographic coordinate systems, map projections, spatial analysis, use of remotely sensed data, and visualization of spatial data. Laboratory exercises use database query, database manipulation, and spatial analysis to address problems in hydrology, water treatment, renewable energy, and transportation with an emphasis on engineering design.
