Early Music Chamber Ensemble

This course offers opportunities to play and sing chamber music from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras, collaborating with musicians from the Five Colleges and with the support of a specialist coach. Ensemble members will draw on historical context and performance practice as they refine performance technique and ensemble skills. Singers and instrumentalists will be sorted into ensembles based on level- from beginner to advanced- and areas of interest.

Five College Collegium

The Five College Collegium is the flagship ensemble of the Five College Early Music Program. The ensemble is made up of experienced singers and instrumentalists from the Five College Consortium, and prepares four large-scale projects in the course of the academic year for public performance. The Collegium rotates its rehearsal residency among the schools in the Five College system, and focuses on repertoire from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.

Agric Chemistry

An introduction to chemical processes integral to understanding soils, agriculture and the environment, focused on basic chemistry principles as they effect carbon and nitrogen cycling, soil fertility, water contamination, organic matter and energy relations.

Aquatic Ecology

Advanced ecology course that examines the interplay between aquatic organisms and their physical, chemical, and biological environment, with an emphasis on freshwater lakes and streams. Students will learn basic concepts, ecological theory, methods in limnology, and apply them to understand the impacts of human activities on aquatic ecosystems.

ST- Mapping Barcelona

This course reflects on the diversity of urban space throughout different materials based on the city. The objective is to reflect on the experience of living in a large city and includes materials that attest to the variety of works that create and reproduce cultural discourse, including plays, TV shows, performances, films, comics, books, and essays. The course follows a thematic road map that considers, among others, the experience of migrants, the dynamics of gentrification process, and the construction of public space.

Bioinformatics Lab

This computer laboratory course is designed to help students construct a working library of bioinformatic tools and resources. The flow of the course will move from traditional DNA sequence analysis techniques to the opportunities afforded by large-scale genomic and gene expression data. During the laboratory students will become familiar with UNIX-based operating systems, write computer programs to manipulate biological data and use relational databases.

In this course, we will explore the American constitutional system as prescribed by the United States Constitution, and as developed by the myriad subsequent decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court throughout this nation's history. Broadly, we will focus on the areas of institutional powers, federalism, and government involvement in commerce, regulation, and taxation. Across these areas, students will learn about the legal, social, historical, and political contexts in which the Supreme Court reaches its decisions.

Narrative Journalism

In this advanced reporting and writing course, we will explore the history as well as the contemporary landscape of narrative journalism?a form of reportage that uses the tools and techniques of narrative?and ask critical questions about its epistemology, conventions, and ethical standards. We will read prominent works and analyze their potential meanings and craft. We will practice key techniques and methods in writing workshops.
