ST-Adv Materials Characteriztn

This course covers the fundamental principles behind characterization approaches such as electron microscopy/spectroscopy, x-ray spectroscopy, diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and synchrotron techniques employed in the development of materials application. Lectures are supplemented by 4-5 laboratory demonstrations of the techniques throughout the term.

ST- Rethinking US Env Policy

This course examines the ways US lands, waters and resources are organized by policies and law, how this has changed over time, and why. We examine underlying structures of law and policy that are often taken for granted. We uncover the political-economic origins of key policies, and trace their long-term social and environmental effects. A key goal is creative and critical comparison: thinking about different ways land, waters, resources and policy have been or might be organized, how and why this changed or might change, and the consequences for the environment and people.

Intro to Old English Poetry

Old English, the bedrock of Present Day English, was the language spoken by Germanic peoples in Britain from the early 400s to 1066. In this course, you will learn the Old English language through the poetry written in it. Selections may include such diverse selections as "Caedmon's Hymn," "The Seafarer," and "Judith." A working knowledge of English grammar is recommended.

International Film

We will screen films from across the globe studying examples of a range of lesser-known subgenres of the Horror film, such as Giallo (Italian genre mixing slasher horror with detective mysteries), Fantastique (French genre mixing gothic horror with fantasy erotica), and Jiangshi (Hong Kong genre mixing slasher horror with Kung Fu). And we will consider in equal measure the so-called dystopian film. We will look at the interrelationship connecting these two modes, which can be seen at work in films like Battle Royale.

Effective communication is not always easy or natural but it can be learned. This course introduces principles behind effective communication and the visual thinking skills that are required for connect with an audience. Participants will learn how to simplify language to make messages clear, accessible, and engaging, and how narrative works in effective communication.
