Psychopharmacology

Psychopharmacology focuses on the impact that drugs (both illicit and prescription) have on the brain, neurocircuitry, and behavior. Students will explore the underlying neurotransmitter systems of the brain and discover how substances influence nervous system function including the experience of pain, sleep, emotional states, motivation, addiction, and mental health. The course will bridge concepts in chemistry, biology, psychology, and neuroscience by highlighting major drug classes and their underlying mechanisms of action.

Writing Nature After Nature

How has writing about nature changed as we face the unfolding crises of our climate? Is there a poetics of climate change, a narrative form suitable for fiction, a nonfictional style that attends to the experience of living "after nature"? This course will ask us to enlarge our environmental imaginations by writing into and beyond the assumed conventions of nature writing and by challenging what and who the subjects of this form may be.

DrawingII:Drawing as Presence

This second-level drawing course will expand on the formal, technical and conceptual foundations introduced in the 100-level drawing course. Grounding most projects in observational drawing, students will draw from various sources including objects and spaces that are unique to Mount Holyoke College. Emphasizing the notion that drawing pulls us into close connection with time and space collectively and individually, drawings will act as a record of this process. Students can expect to produce traditional and experimental drawings for their final portfolio.

Neurobiology of Appetite

Although the ingestive act per se is clear and simple, understanding the multifarious influences that are distilled into the decision at any given moment to eat, or not to eat, remains a ponderous challenge for scientists. The obesity epidemic of the last several decades continues to spread across the globe, leading to a rise in metabolic diseases and more pressing need than ever to understand the neurobiological controls of eating and body weight.

Frankfurt School

The Critical Theory of the Frankfurt School was an attempt both to study modern capitalist society and to make possible its eventual transformation. Generally influenced by a Marxist critique of modern capitalism and its alienated form of life, thinkers in the Frankfurt School were troubled and disappointed by the fact that the promised Marxist revolution never took place. The relation between theory and practice turned out to be more difficult than assumed.
