ST-Reframing the Wood Frame

This course will examine the material history of wood frame construction in the United States, with a particular focus on residential construction and the single family house. This will include an investigation of the wood frame from the perspective of detailing and construction, as well as an exploration of the broader assemblage of social, technological, economic, and environmental forces that extend from its use.

ST- Shipping Container Design

This course explores alternative design solutions for low-energy, affordable housing through the use of up-cycled shipping containers as the basis for modest but innovate housing. This course will be the design phase of a design/build collaboration with Yestermorrow Design/Build School. Students will gain experience with all phases of a design project from ideation through schematic design and ultimately technical documentation. Particular emphasis will be given to building science and the integration of technical and aesthetic concerns.

Graduate Design Studio II

Introduction to architectural design studio projects consist of basic architectural problems to which students must respond with designed solution. Studio projects emphasize the evolution of a project through careful attention to program and site. Emphasis on acquiring the skills necessary to communicate design intention.

Honors Research

The Commonwealth Honors College thesis or project is intended to provide students with the opportunity to work closely with faculty members to define and carry out in-depth research or creative endeavors. It provides excellent preparation for students who intend to continue their education through graduate study or begin their professional careers. The student works closely with their 499Y Honors Research sponsor to pursue research on a topic or question of special interest to them in preparation for writing a 499T Honors Thesis or completing a 499P Honors Project.

Honors Thesis

Honors Thesis expectations are high. The intended end-product is a traditional research manuscript with accompanying artifact(s), all theses: - are 6 credits or more of sustained research on a single topic, typically conducted over two semesters. - begin with creative inquiry and systematic research. - include documentation of substantive scholarly endeavor. - culminate in an oral defense or other form of public presentation.
