Focus on issues of social identity, social and cultural diversity, and societal manifestations of oppression. This course explores the relationship between hip hop culture and language and literacy practices of global youth cultures. We will look at this relationship in school and out-of-school contexts. (Gen. Ed. SB, DG)

Single subject group research design. Sampling, interview and questionnaire construction, statistical methods, and development of research proposal.

Examines the history and philosophy as well as purposes and characteristics of mixed methods research, types of research problems addressed, major mixed methods designs, data collection, and analysis strategies.

This colloq serves as a service learning and community engagement experience where students who are planning to become K-12 teachers have opportunities to understand the conditions that culturally and linguistically diverse students need to overcome in order to learn and succeed in school.

This course supports pre- and in-service teachers in critically analyzing multicultural/multilingual adolescent literature using a combination of Understanding by Design (Wiggins & McTighe) and Systemic Functional Linguistics (Rose & Martin). This course will meet the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) subject matter requirements for adolescent literature.

The purpose of this course is to provide the student with an introduction to classroom assessment that includes a consideration of technical issues, as well as policy issues related to test use and misuse in American education. The ultimate goal of this course is to provide the student with a balance of both theory and its practical applications in the area of assessment. This class is not designed strictly for teachers; however, students who are education minors or who plan to become teachers will find this class useful.
