If Middle Eastern societies did not secularize during the years 1400-1800, does that mean that the relationship between politics and religion didn't change at all? In fact, important changes did occur and this course will investigate their impact on the region's history by surveying institutions, social movements, political writings and imperial policies of the Ottoman Empire and Iran. The discipline of art history and the tools of visual analysis it employs. Focus on issues such as Classicism, "primitive" art, realism, and modernity, presented in roughly chronological order. Discussion of these issues in relation to contemporary visual culture. (Gen.Ed. AT, DG)

Political ecology has developed over the past few decades as an interdisciplinary critique of environmental devastation, scientific management, and environmental activism. Attending to the intersections of anthropology and political ecology, this course will provide an introduction to the key debates of political ecology as well how these debates have articulated with foundational anthropological concerns. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-Anth majors.

Throughout the semester, we will explore in depth the interaction of biological, social, and cultural factors in determining human diet, nutrition, and health. Course content will include discussions about the various approaches to nutritional anthropology, nutritional basics, food behaviors, methods of dietary and nutritional assessment, and a series of case studies addressing causes and consequences to nutritional problems across the world. Major anthropological contributions will be highlighted, along with works from nutrition, epidemiology, and other fields.

While the health and wellbeing of the nation has improved overall, racial, ethnic, gender and sexuality disparities in morbidity and mortality persist. To successfully address growing disparities, it is important to understand social determinants of health and translate current knowledge into specific strategies to undo health inequalities. This course will explore social justice as a philosophical underpinning of public health and will consider the etiology of disease rooted in social conditions.
