Independent Study

Consider independently exploring a topic of interest under the guidance of a faculty member. Once you identify the subject, take time to research our faculty and their publications. It is important to ensure your interests intersect before asking if they will work with you. This work will be graded and may apply to your upper-level Political Science degree requirements.

Intro to Numerical Methods

This course introduces numerical methods used by mechanical engineers. It involves coding algorithms in MatLab and observing the types of numerical errors that arise. It is suitable for junior and senior undergraduates students and provides an understanding of basic numerical methods with focuses on accounting for numerical errors in order to analyze engineering problems using numerical solutions.

Animal Behavior Theory

This course will explore the scientific study of animal behavior in the context of natural selection and evolutionary theory following Rubenstein's text, "Animal Behavior," in addition to examples from contemporary literature. As a group, we will investigate functional and evolutionary bases of animal behavior in the context of reproductive behavior, mating systems, parental care, altruism, social behavior, communication, and cognition.

Animal Behavior Research

This hands-on field course will cover research methods for observing, coding, and analyzing animal behavior. We will practice behavior sampling and recording techniques on domestic animals at the farm, wild animals in the campus woods, and captive animals in the lab. We will use tools and equipment for measuring and tracking behaviors, including social behavior, foraging and communication behavior.

Appetite

(Offered as NEUR 317 and PSYC 317) Although the ingestive act per se is clear and simple, understanding the multifarious influences that are distilled into the decision at any given moment to eat, or not to eat, remains a ponderous challenge for scientists. The obesity epidemic of the last several decades continues to spread across the globe, leading to a rise in metabolic diseases and more pressing need than ever to understand the neurobiological controls of eating and body weight.
