Women Scientists

The sciences are defined by those who push past the bounds of human knowledge and break down the thought barriers of their time. This seminar will explore the stories of women scientists who changed the world and will celebrate their inspiring discoveries which upended our understanding of the cosmos, the planet and ourselves. These pioneers paved the way for future generations of women scientists and explorers. By learning about their lives, we seek to understand the cultural attitudes, historical forces and social realities that made science what it is today and what it will be tomorrow.

FYS- Renewable Energy Tech

We have all heard of greenhouse gas emissions and its scary big brother: climate change. How are scientists combating this problem and moving towards a cleaner, greener future? In this seminar, we will investigate innovative technologies that use energy from renewable sources. From buses that run on water, to energy harvesting sidewalks, we will explore the function, feasibility, and limitations of renewable energy solutions.

FYS- Champions of Curiosity

Who are the real people that drive discovery? Explore stories of the characters behind the science, from the self-made doctor who performed the first heart surgery to the Hollywood actress who invented the foundation for today's cell phone and Bluetooth technologies. We will reflect on how anyone can think like a scientist, since we all possess an innate curiosity about the world around us. Class activities will explore how to inspire this curiosity in yourself and others. Come ready to dive into some remarkable stories that didn't show up in your high school science textbook!

FYS-Art/Science & Science/Art

How do we communicate discoveries? Capturing the essence of a concept and expressing it to a broader audience is the key to success in both science and art. We will be investigating how to get ideas to reach beyond their creators through the intersection of the scientific and artistic methods, focusing on the processes with which both scientists and artists engage with the world to collect, interpret and translate information. We will be conducting hands-on activities and exploring resources on campus, ultimately producing our own showcase of science communication through art.

Organisms:Diversity&Interactns

This course is a fully online course where participants will explore the diversity of life through an investigation of a local representative ecosystem. They will begin with field studies into particular habitats and compare biodiversity among habitats. Initial observations of the organisms themselves, including classification to the kingdom level, will lead to a study of how organisms are organized into populations, communities, and ecosystems.
