ST- Scenario Planning

The goal of this seminar is to introduce students to scenario planning as a professional technique to address uncertain futures on behalf of our communities. Scenarios can be used to challenge conventional thinking and promote creative plan-making that is supported with rigorous analysis of empirical data.

ST- Perceptions of Nature

This course will examine perceptions of nature through multiple, diverse disciplinary and interdisciplinary lenses, including historical, anthropological, literary, political and psychological perspectives. Students will be introduced to and engage with a new perspective and/or topic related to humans' perceptions of nature. Using each disciplinary perspective as a lens, we will discuss the way nature has been presented and the ontological/epistemological bases of our understanding of nature.

Live Digital Sports Productn I

In this course, students will work in conjunction with UMass Athletics to produce live video sports content for ESPN+, NESN, web streaming and in-house video. Through lectures, observation, analysis, hands-on labs and working as crew for UMass sporting events, students will gain an understanding of the production elements of a live sports broadcast.

ST- Public Sociology

This course is about communicating sociology to non-academic audiences. We will study existing examples of public sociology via social media, podcasts, blogs, and op-eds. And we'll do it ourselves! For example, in the podcasting unit, we will practice the oral communication, in accessible language, of both the process and results of sociological research. While we will emphasize content, we'll learn the basic technology for each method of communication, such as audio recording and processing for podcasting.

Writing In Biology

Satisfies Junior Year Writing requirement for Biology majors. Students write and revise short papers on subjects likely to be encountered by biologists. Class discussion of papers. Prerequisites: 3 biological science courses, for declared Biology majors only.

ST-Professional&CareerDevSem

We will discuss a variety of topics related to professional, career and personal success and satisfaction. Examples of these topics include but are not limited to, job searching skills, time/distraction management, creativity/innovation, financial models for research and science and legal structure for intellectual property such as patents, etc.

Weather & Our Atmosphere

Basic weather parameters, light and energy in the atmosphere. Topics include: atmospheric gases and their behavior; instability of the atmosphere; winds and their origin: large scale, small scale. Moisture: evaporation, condensation, clouds. Kinds of precipitation. Storms: hurricanes, thunderstorms, tornadoes. Atmospheric optics: rainbows, halos, mirages. Climate and climate change. (Gen.Ed.
