ST-Professional&CareerDevSem

We will discuss a variety of topics related to professional, career and personal success and satisfaction. Examples of these topics include but are not limited to, job searching skills, time/distraction management, creativity/innovation, financial models for research and science and legal structure for intellectual property such as patents, etc.

ST-Global Environmentl History

This course will examine the impact that interactions between humans and the larger biophysical world have had on the global past. From the late 1400s, new encounters and unprecedentedly lengthy trade networks rapidly transformed the Old World Web into the World Wide Web. This process has greatly changed the way that nature and humankind interact on a local, regional, and global scale, greatly amplifying the impact that the two have upon one another. We will be asking three key

Foundations of Data Science

The field of Data Science encompasses methods, processes, and systems that enable the extraction of useful knowledge from data. Foundations of Data Science introduces core data science concepts including computational and inferential thinking, along with core data science skills including computer programming and statistical methods. The course presents these topics in the context of hands-on analysis of real-world data sets, including economic data, document collections, geographical data, and social networks.

Astrophysics II:Galaxies

The application of physics to the understanding of astronomical phenomena. Physical processes in the gaseous interstellar medium: photoionization in HII regions and planetary nebulae; shocks in supernova remnants and stellar jets; energy balance in molecular clouds. Dynamics of stellar systems: star clusters and the virial theorem; galaxy rotation and the presence of dark matter in the universe; spiral density waves. Quasars and active galactic nuclei: synchroton radiation; accretion disks; supermassive black holes.

Revenue Management

A hybrid course focusing on strategic decision making related to revenue management in the hospitality industry. Revenue management has become an increasingly important area of decision-making for managers today. This course should improve your understanding of basic principles and practical tools for customer-centric revenue management as applied to services - particularly hotels and restaurants. Several high-impact revenue drivers will be covered. Emphasis will be placed on issues such as forecasting, differential-pricing, price management, and revenue optimization strategies.

Visual Storytelling

This course explores visual narrative over sequences of images as used in time-based media, interactive media, and graphic novels. Students will become familiar with the disciplines that use sequential art, as well as the tools necessary for composition, panel design, and visual translation of written scripts. We will study time-based media in both linear and nonlinear modes, as well as composition and the visual arc of panels on physical pages and screens.
