This course will look at social change through the perspective of policies and strategies that have made a large positive difference in people's lives. Each week we will cover a successful public policy and a strategy that helped make that policy successful. Successful policies could include desalinization projects, a poverty alleviation program, and/or a new way of providing access to justice. We will study these policies in the context of successful social-change strategies, such as systems thinking, asset mapping, impact measurement, and appreciative inquiry.

The course develops the practical knowledge and analytical skill required to make sense of field problems faced by public managers, and to design and implement strategic and effective practical action in the public sector. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-PolSci majors.

To imagine changing even a small part of the world is a daunting, yet exhilarating proposition. Through class exercises, readings, exploration of social policy, guest speakers and a project that takes you to parts of the campus you might otherwise not explore, you will acquire knowledge and skills necessary for becoming a person who can make a difference. By the end of the semester you will have learned to connect ideas with action, have made a positive contribution to your community, and understand, through experience, the personal and social value of community engagement.

This course is for students who dream of starting, running, or working for a social or environmental enterprise---an organization that places "people" and "planet" ahead of or on an equal footing with ?profit.? In this class, students will take initial steps towards creating a fictional social mission enterprise, with practicing social entrepreneurs acting as mentors. Students will also complete a project that will help solve an issue facing the social enterprise with which their mentor is affiliated.

Theories of policy-formation are applied to several timely issues of US and global policy. Issues are grouped around a broad theme, such as environmental policy or security. Relevant experts/policymakers will help students complete policy simulations on our issues.

This seminar introduces students to enduring and emerging information policy issues in public interest battles fought locally, nationally and globally for the control of Internet infrastructure, code and content. We will analyze how policy and regulation, politics, commercial interests, nation-states, transnational organizations and organized civil society actors are shaping our digital communication environment, considering the implications of Internet governance for democracy and human development.

This course introduces the politics of policy-making in explicit cross-national focus. It satisfies a core requirement for SPP MPP/MPPA students. Focus is on how values, institutions, and choices shape outcome.

Through skill development and contact with professionals, this course prepares students for successful careers in public policy and administration. Students gain an understanding of their strengths and develop career goals.

The goals of this course are to teach you basic GIS concepts such as spatial data sources and structures, projections and coordinate systems, geospatial analysis, cartographic modeling, and the integration of remote sensing and GIS. By the end of the course, students will be proficient in ESRI ArcGIS software.
