When a constitutional democracy is defined as a political regime in which the majority of citizens are able to select their governors, the United States' reliance on the electoral college denies this principle. If understood as constitutional norms of separation of power, the rule of law, civility, etc., the current political climate does not fare well either. Many citizens believe that this is a perilous time for the values and institutions that constitute the hallmarks of the American republic.

Relevant forms of Black cultural expressions contributing to the shape and character of contemporary Black culture; the application of these in traditional Black writers. Includes: West African cultural patterns and the Black past; the transition-slavery, the culture of survival; the cultural patterns through literature; and Black perceptions versus white perceptions. S-Prac in Sch Psych Assessment

The purpose of this practicum is to provide students with practicing and supervised training in administering assessments common to the practice of school psychology. Such assessments include cognitive and intellectual assessment, educational and academic assessments, curriculum based assessments and measurement, and social/emotional and behavioral assessments.

The course explores the complex web of issues that children, families, and early childhood educators face in our diverse society. Issues and ideologies of race, ethnicity, class, language, literacies, and special needs emerge in pre-school and school settings that challenge our educational vision of providing equal life chances to all children. By offering the opportunity to examine issues through socio-cultural and critical lenses, the course seeks to foster construction of knowledge that will enable students to be advocates for children and families in a range of educational settings.

Intro to Data Science

The terms "data science" and "big data" appear in the news media and in everyday conversations. Moreover, we are told that we live in the "age of information", where almost every business venture and scientific research initiative collect a massive amount of data which may contain valuable information. This course is an introduction to the concepts and skills involved with the collection, management, analysis, and presentation of data sets and the data products that result from the work of data scientists.

Social Change in the 1960's

Few periods in United States. history experienced as much change and turmoil as the "Long Sixties" (1954-1975), when powerful social movements overhauled American gender norms, restructured the Democratic and Republican parties, and abolished the South's racist "Jim Crow" regime. This course examines the movements that defined this era.
