Computnl & Math Methods/Chem

This class is focused on computational and mathematical problems in chemistry using modern symbolic computational tools. Using the software platform Mathematica (free to UMass students via site license), we will develop tools for data visualization and manipulation, and statistical methods in chemistry. In addition, we will explore aspects differential equation solving and visualization of solutions. Finally, we will explore elements of linear algebra, linear transformations, and group theory as applied to chemical systems.

Service Industry Operations

The service industry accounts for about 75% of the US employment and almost 60% of all personal consumption. This course will explore the service industries (e.g., transportation, health care, retailing, restaurants, and financial services) with a view toward developing models that allow planners to reduce costs and enhance customer service.

S- History, Evidence, Memory

This seminar explores the topics of historical evidence, reconstruction, and memory by focusing on one key event - the 1948 war in Palestine. We shall analyze how historians form their topics of study, which sources they use, and this choices change as a result of influences internal to the historical discipline as well as external to it, such as new cultural and political circumstances.
