Probability & Statistics in CE

This course will introduce the field of probability and statistics, and demonstrate its importance and utility in the solution of problems specifically of interest to civil and environmental engineering. Topics include statistical data reduction, concept of basic probability, sampling and inference, experimental design and data analysis, statistical methods in quality improvement, and statistical design theory. Prerequisite: MATH 132.

ST- Modern Tibetan VI

Modern Tibetan VI is the second part of a four-part intermediate course sequence in Modern Tibetan. The course is offered through the Five College Center for the Study of World Languages. The independent study format includes small group conversation sessions and an evaluation by an outside evaluator. Students studying Modern Tibetan develop speaking and listening skills needed for study abroad in Tibet or Tibetan-speaking areas and to support course work in Asian Studies or Buddhist Studies.

Food Justice/Feeding 10 Bil.

Humans currently produce enough food to feed the;7.6 billion people on Earth. Despite this fact,;815 million people went hungry in 2017 and this;number is on the rise. With a growing population,;we will need to increase food production, but;first we must fix our current food system and;ensure equitable food access for all peoples.;This class will frame the problem at the local;and global scales by covering topics including:;food security; food sovereignty; food justice;;and the connections between race, food, and;health.

Life on the Wing

Did you know a tiny bird that weighs only as much;as two nickels (U.S. 5-cent coins) can fly;without stopping for three straight days and;cover a distance equal to that from Mount;Holyoke College to South America? For this class;we will explore foundational biological concepts;by examining the wonderful world of birds. This;course will take advantage of the diverse bird;communities in our own back yard and will meet;outside;as much as possible for labs examining topics;such as biodiversity, structure and function,;ecology, evolution, hypothesis testing, and;observation.

S-HFA Opportunity Scholars Sem

An overview of learning strategies, assessment tools, and campus resources available to help new HFA students transition to the University. Students benefit from one-on-one mentoring, field trips and social programming, career exploration, guest speakers, and support from direct interaction with our campus partners. In addition to the Tuesday class time, students will be required to attend a career series offered by HFA on four specified Thursday evenings.

FYS- Crowdsourcing Nature

How can we educate society about the natural world, contribute to important scientific studies, and help conserve threatened species? Citizen science! We will work together to collect real, useable ecological data from the field and join an international community of citizen scientists. You will take part in different citizen science ecology projects happening around the world, such as iNaturalist, eBird, and Notes from Nature.

COLQ: LATIN AMER-WOMEN & GENDE

Topics course.: This course will use gender as an analytical lens to understand key themes and periods of Latin American history, from the pre-Columbian era to present-day neoliberalism. Drawing from a variety of methodological approaches, the course will illuminate how gender has shaped social relationships, institutions, identities, and discourses in the region. It will prioritize the role of women and how their individual and collective actions have impacted Latin America.
