Focus on developing, evaluating, and improving hypotheses concerning the structure of the language user's unconscious linguistic knowledge. Investigation of sentence structure (syntax), sound structure (phonology), word structure (morphology), and meaning (semantics). (Gen.Ed. R2)

Language Acquisition

Theoretical foundations and methodology of the study of child language. Relationship between language acquisition, study of universal grammar, and theoretical psychology. Experimental term project customary. Prerequisite: LINGUIST 601.

S-2ndLangAcquisition&Research

By the end of the semester, you will be able to say, "I know how we acquire a second (third, fourth) language!" You will develop a strong knowledge of second language acquisition: its challenges, major theories and why it is fascinating. We will go over Bilingualism as well, and explore the differences between adult and child acquisition. Active participation required, presentations, readings every week, for a class led as a seminar. Designed for students not majoring in linguistics.
