Advanced German

In this course, students will continue to become acquainted with German-speaking cultures, while deepening their ability to analyze cultural material critically. Work on critical analysis will include numerous writing assignments and class discussion of films, articles, short stories, essays, and more. Review of complex grammar issues will be provided as well. After successful completion of this course, students should enter German 320. Prerequisite: German 240 or equivalent.

Intro to Industrial Design

This course is a broad-brush introduction to the field of industrial design. Classes will be held at the HC Center for Design. Topics will include sketching and rendering, construction of models and prototypes, design for mass production, and project management. Emphasis will be on sustainable use of materials and resources. Prerequisite: IA-0130 Design Fundamentals at Hampshire College or a similar introductory hands-on problem solving and design class.

American Sign Language I

This course introduces the third mostly widely used language in the United States and Canada. It is intended to give an overview of both the language and the culture of the deaf community. Emphasis will be focused on learning basic grammatical structure as well as developing receptive and expressive signing skills used in everyday conversation, also being able to give a skit in American Sign Language. Cultural aspects of the Deaf community will be shared through readings, videotapes/DVDS, presenters and class discussion.

The Family

First part: historical transformations in family life (relationships between husbands and wives, position and treatment of children, importance of kinship ties); second part: the contemporary family through life course (choice of a mate, relations in marriage, parenthood, breakup of the family unit).
