Landscape Ecology

Introduction to the evolving discipline of landscape ecology, with emphasis on the theoretical underpinnings Focus on ecological scaling; landscape structure; agents of landscape structure; consequences of landscape structure to populations, communities, and ecosystem processes; landscape dynamics; and landscape management. Emphasis on modeling.

ST- Topics in Biophysics

This course, intended for students with a background in physical, chemical, or quantitative life science, will cover physical principles that apply to biological molecules and cells: Bownian motion, low Reynolds-number environments, forces relevant to cells and molecules, chemical potentials and free energies, as well as the basics of polymer physics. These principles will be applied to enzymes as molecular machines, membranes, DNA, and RNA.

ST- Human Genome Analysis

This course covers current topics in genetics and and the social, ethical and legal issues surrounding genetic technology. Topics include genome structure and evolution, genetics of disease, personal genomics, human microbiomes and epidemiology. Students will have the opportunity to submit their DNA for genome-wide SNP and gut microbiome determination. Practical skills for analyzing genetic and genomic data are taught through weekly bioinformatic sessions in the R statistical programming language.

IS- Data Science

The goal of this course is to provide Professional Masters students with industry mentorship and real-world data science training. Beyond-classroom educational opportunities are an excellent way to gain practical experience on a substantial project, to learn advanced skills, to collaborate with a professional PhD researcher, to form a connection to a data science company, and to work in a team with other graduate students. Industry partners propose semester-long data science projects.

Civil Liberties (colloq)

This course introduces students to how the Supreme Court works as a legal institution, by examining landmark civil liberties decisions of the Court within their political and historical contexts. As an Integrative Experience course, this course also connects knowledge and skills from multiple sources, helps build oral communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills, and strengthens students' analytical understanding of how the Supreme Court works. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-POLSCI majors.

Public Policy

Focus on how public policies are made in the U.S., including the role of citizens, interest groups, and government institutions. Emphasis on the processes by which policies are made in various institutions, including the Presidency, Congress, bureaucracy, and courts. Examples cover numerous public policies, such as campaign finance reform, foreign policy, and the environment. (Gen.Ed. SB)
