An introduction to atomic scale simulations for materials science applications relevant to the design and optimization of materials, especially at the nanoscale. Topics include numerical techniques, algorithms, and simulation procedures commonly employed to study the energetics and kinetics of surfaces, to compute bulk properties of solids, and to model defects in solids. Hands-on experience with standard modeling and visualization packages and with writing small simulation programs.

Hands-on experience with standard molecular modeling and visualization packages and with writing simulation programs.

Social justice is an integral part of public health but what exactly is social justice and how can the public health professional bring this concept into daily practice? This course is about the intersection of public health and social justice. We will concentrate on the meaning of social justice and how it is applicable to the public health professional. The course is roughly divided into three sections. First we will look at the philosophical underpinnings of social justice using classical and contemporary theorists. Second, we will see how social injustice affects various populations.

In 2020, Massachusetts will commemorate the landing of the Mayflower in 1620, framing it as an event of local, national and even global significance. The first part of the course will contextualize the events of 1620, starting with the deep history of Patuxet (the Wampanoag name for the place that became Plymouth) and Indigenous peoples in New England before contact; continuing to the European histories that launched the Mayflower and its passengers; and examining consequent events through the seventeenth century.

Survey of AfricanAmerican literature of the 1920s: fiction, poetry, essays, folklore. Through the eyes and ideas of the writers, time, place, and socio historical and political contexts of 1920s revealed.
