Communicating in Japanese

This course is designed to help students become effective communicators in Japanese. The course uses the Team Based Learning format, meaning that students will do activities in teams. The first part of the course focuses on two key Japanese social concepts that have had extensive impact on communication: the uchi (inside)/soto (outside) distinction and the hierarchical order.

ST-Manga/Anime

Japan has become a phenomenally successful exporter of pop culture. This course will give students tools to understand Manga and Anime; it will investigate the role Manga and Anime play in Japan; and, it will examine ways that Manga and Anime flow from one place to another. Course is conducted entirely in English.

Ints Interm Japan II

Course builds reading skills through reading and grammatical analysis of the text; Builds spoken fluency by discussion of the text through oral drills on new vocabulary and grammar, and through the use of video material. Further emphasis on learning kanji. Part 2 of two-part course. Prerequisite: JAPANESE 326.

Prob&Meth Translatn

Advanced training in practical techniques associated with the translation of modern Japanese; familiarization with appropriate glossaries, dictionaries and other translator's tools. Discussion of specific problems in Japanese-English translation and practice with a variety of prose styles used in journalistic, political, commercial, literary, and other forms of modern writing. (for Grad students)
