Topics course: In the new millennium, Japan faces numerous challenges in the wake of nuclear disaster, environmental decline, and economic uncertainty. This seminar will examine different responses in literature, film and popular culture to such challenges, including post-Fukushima writing, manga of the precariat, and dystopic cinema. We will consider both the limitations and new possibilities emerging from these difficult times. The seminar will culminate in individual student research projects focusing on specific texts from contemporary Japan.

Introduction to the use of authentic written and visual documents commonly encountered in China today, with an emphasis on television news broadcasts and newspaper articles. Exercises in composition as well as oral presentations complement daily practice in reading and listening comprehension. Prerequisite: 301 or permission of the instructor.
