The course is divided into four units: Models of Inquiry; the Impact of Science and Technology; Social Philosophy and Civic Engagement; and Art in the World. The course is supplemented with a plenary lecture by a distinguished honors faculty speaker.

Adv Natural Language Processng

This course covers a broad range of advanced level topics in natural language processing. It is intended for graduate students in computer science who have familiarity with machine learning fundamentals. It may also be appropriate for computationally sophisticated students in linguistics and related areas. Topics include probabilistic models of language, computationally tractable linguistic representations for syntax and semantics, and selected topics in discourse and text mining. After completing the course, students should be able to read and evaluate current NLP research papers.

ST- Clean Energy Corps

Students in the UMass Clean Energy Corps will work in teams with energy engineers and other staff of the UMass Clean Energy Extension to provide energy analysis and high-level energy audits to Massachusetts cities and towns. We will collect and analyze municipal energy data, conduct walk through and instrumented energy audits on site for some facilities, and provide guidance to help municipalities cut their energy consumption by at least 20%. Students will learn a variety of data analysis and building diagnostic techniques as well as gain experience working with municipal clients.

StatisticalConsultingPracticum

This course provides a forum for training in statistical consulting. Application of statistical methods to real problems, as well as interpersonal and communication aspects of consulting are explored in the consulting environment. Students enrolled in this class will become eligible to conduct consulting projects as consultants in the Statistical Consulting and Collaboration Services group in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

ST-Simulation-Based Optimizatn

This class will look at optimization problems related to stochastic systems for which the analytical form of the objective function are not known or are too complex to formulate. But the value of the function can be evaluated at specific points of the decision variables through simulation, and the problem can be solved using numerical optimization techniques. We will learn multiple algorithms for solving such problems. We will look at both static systems (parametric optimization) and dynamic systems (control optimization).

Alt Res Meth Intl Ed

Historical and theoretical grounding in non-positivistic research approaches. Alternative research methodologies include feminist research methods and issues, discourse analysis and deconstruction as post-modern research approaches, and participatory action research approaches as emerging from a post-colonial historiography.
