This course offers practice in writing various kinds of narrative. Assignments emphasize clarity, concision, and creativity. Exercises lead to longer work: sketches or short stories. Students hone critical as well as writing skills. Student papers are duplicated and discussed in class, along with selected works by published authors.

We explore how memorialization and reconciliation take place in societies that have experienced extreme violence. How do survivors, perpetrators and their descendants record the experience of atrocity through testimonials and memorials in ways that contrast with 'official' national narratives of the past? In what ways does memorialization end cycles of violence without re-triggering trauma? How does restorative justice, for example, address feelings of despair or guilt that get passed down from one generation to another?

This course considers an array of ethical issues in computing. Readings, class discussions, and guest speakers will cover topics related to avenues of development in artificial intelligence, privacy, identity, inclusiveness, environmental responsibility, internet censorship, network policy, plagiarism, intellectual property and others. All examples will be drawn from current and recent events with readings from a range of sources both journalistic and academic. Guest speakers will include CS industry professionals, and course assignments will have real world applications.

Required for all art majors during their junior or senior year. A grade of C or better needed to graduate.

This course will provide an introduction to, and comprehensive overview of, reinforcement learning (RL), including hierarchical RL, deep RL, and connections to animal learning.

The purpose of this course is to prepare exploratory track students to achieve academic success at UMass. The curriculum will aim to orient students to the health science fields and the major options within, assist students with major exploration outside of the health sciences, create strategies for academic success, transition to campus life and learn how to effectively navigate and utilize campus resources.
