Phys&Chem Processng of Materls

The course aims at a comprehensive introduction to the physical and chemical processes involved in the design and manufacturing of materials used in current materials engineering technologies, including modern device fabrication technologies. The course will offer a broad review of kinetic processes in engineering materials that control the materials' structural and chemical characteristics in relation to material properties.

Dynamics

Kinetics and Kinematics of particles and rigid bodies. Newton?s laws, work-energy and impulse-momentum principles, laws of linear and angular momentum, conservation of momentum, planar motion of rigid bodies, and introduction to vibration of single-degree-of-freedom systems.

Prerequisites: CE-ENGIN 240 or M&I-ENG 210

Seminar

Presentation of current research activities and literature by faculty, graduate students, and outside visitors. Credit, 1 ea sem.

Finite Element Anlys

The underlying mathematical theory behind the finite element method and its application to the solution of problems from solid mechanics. Includes a term project involving the application of the finite element method to a realistic and sufficiently complex engineering problem selected by the student and approved by the instructor; requires the use of a commercial finite element code. Strong background in linear algebra and calculus recommended. Mr. Grosse

ST-System Dynamics

Modeling, analysis, and simulation of dynamic systems. Models for the dynamics of systems from different disciplines derived using differential equations and then transformed into state-space and input/output forms, and finally simulated. Relevant concepts from Laplace Transform, linear algebra, and complex variables covered. The models analyzed for transient response and frequency response properties.

Heat Transfer

The fundamental principles and applications of heat transfer by conduction, convection, and radiation. Steady state and transient conduction, numerical methods in conduction, convection in internal and external flows, radiation exchange between surfaces. Design of heat exchangers. Prerequisites: M&I-ENG 230 and 340.

Oper Research II

Stochastic models including discrete time Markov chains, continuous time Markov processes, Markov decision processes, queuing theory, dynamic programming and their application to manufacturing and service sector engineering processes.
