ST-Model,Simulatn&UncertQuant

We discuss first what are rare events, why are they important, how are they modeled and why their simulation is a significant high performance computing challenge. We will discuss some of the existing methods and will apply them in prototype systems in applications selected from (among others) queueing theory, molecular dynamics, biochemical reaction networks and finance. Furthermore, we will discuss mathematical theories for rare events and in particular elements of the theory of large deviations and its insights in providing better sampling algorithms for rare events.

ST-Industry-Sponsored Mech Des

This is a senior design project course for a 2-semester industry-sponsored project. Students will attend MIE 415 for 2-semesters and remain on the same team for the project duration. Project includes design concept selection, design specification writing, assembly design (DFM), design analysis, a final report and oral presentations in defense of the design. Satisfies a technical elective requirement for BS-ME majors.

This course will examine the evolution of the U.S. legal system's treatment of rape, paying particular attention to the movement against lynching in the post-civil war era, the rise of the feminist anti-rape movement in the 1970s and the student movement against campus sexual assault.
