Introduction to the basic methodology and results of modern linguistics. Focus on developing, evaluating, and improving hypotheses concerning the structure of the language user's unconscious linguistic knowledge. Investigation of sentence structure (syntax), sound structure (phonology), word structure (morphology), and meaning (semantics). (Gen.Ed. R2)

Beginning Korean II is the second half of a two-semester introductory course in spoken and written Korean for students who have some previous knowledge of Korean. This course improves students’ communicative competence in daily life, focusing on the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Some of the activities include vocabulary-building exercises, conversation in authentic contexts, in-depth study of grammar, listening comprehension and pronunciation practice, mini-presentations, Korean film reviews and Korean film making.

Robot soccer has been adopted as a test bed and progress marker for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics research since 1996. The primary success of soccer as a test bed is that the high-level evaluation of a successful team is readily understandable to everyone: the team that scores more goals, and "plays better soccer," is likely the team with the most effective innovations.

This course discusses fundamental interactions between microbes, minerals, and organic matter responsible for carbon cycling, mineral weathering, and nutrient dynamics in soils. Through a combination of lectures and in-class discussions, we will examine the importance of these interactions for soil development, carbon storage, and fertility. Further, we will discuss the underlying mechanisms and suitable analytical methods for their investigation. Finally, we will examine how these mechanisms respond to global environmental change, and how this response in turn impacts soil functioning.
