The body of literature written by Asian American women over the past 100 years has been recognized as forming a coherent tradition. What conditions enabled its emergence? How have the qualities and concerns of this tradition been defined? What makes a text central or marginal to the tradition? Writers to be studied include Maxine Hong Kingston, Sui Sin Far, Mitsuye Yamada, M. Evelina Galang, Trinh T. Minh-ha, Marilyn Chin, Paisley Rekdal, Lynda Barry, Jhumpa Lahiri, Bharati Mukherjee and Ruth Ozeki.

This is an introductory course on modern Middle Eastern history, (1789?2011), focusing on the main socio-political and cultural forces that affected the region. It analyzes how specific events and long-term processes informed the realities of Middle Eastern life with emphasis on significant developments, including Ottoman reform; role of imperialism and colonialism; the emergence of nationalism(s) the rise of nation-states; and ideologies such as Zionism and Islamism.

The 2016 presidential election has already become the subject of fascination, speculation, and concern for many American citizens, pundits, and politicians, overturning many assumptions guiding the study of American politics. This course will use the presidential election as a window through which to view the changing American political landscape.

Introduction to the principles and practices of international relations in the political, military, economic, and environmental realms. Study of the development of the contemporary system to explore the effects of the structure of the international system, the institutions through which states conduct their relations, and domestic characteristics on the relations among states.
