This is a course designed to introduce the key theories at use in sociology and other related academic disciplines, with close attention paid to inequality, solidarity, individualism, bureaucracy and capitalism. The goal is to provide a theoretical web and collaborative learning experiences wherein students will be able to situate social theories and debates in relation to one another, in relation to the theories/perspectives of other disciplines, and also in relation to important issues of the day.

Important forms of kindness and cruelty (from helping and harming among individuals to violence between groups and genocide). Historical conditions, cultures, personal characteristics that lead to kindness or cruelty. Devaluation, scapegoating, the role of ideology; prosocial values, empathy, feelings of responsibility. Socialization, experience with peers, culture promoting kindness or cruelty. Prerequisite: introductory psychology.

Neoclassical microeconomic theory. Consumer behavior, theory of the firm, markets, income distribution, general equilibrium, welfare economics. This course differs from Economics 203 in its more extensive use of mathematics and its broader and deeper coverage of those topics.

This course examines current advances in environmental health science via lectures from UMass faculty with research programs related to environmental health, UMass PhD students in the EHS program, as well as visiting scholars. Seminar topics will change from week to week and will include topics such as pollution, exposure assessments, mechanistic toxicology, environmental health policy, environmental epidemiology, and others.

This course is a one-credit seminar on security research across departments at UMass. Each presentation will cover an active research topic at UMass in a way that assumes only a basic background in security. External speakers may also be invited. Note that this course is not intended to be an introduction to cybersecurity, and will not teach the fundamentals of security in a way that would be useful as a foundation for future security coursework. The intended audience is graduate and advanced undergraduate students, as well as faculty. Meets with ECE/MATH 591CF.

Open only to first-year students in the Computing and Informatics Exploratory Track RAP. This course does not count toward any requirements for the CS major or minor.
