This course focuses on some representative authors and works from Portugal, Brazil, Lusophone Africa, and Lusophone United States. Writers represented are Sa-Carneido, Miguel Torga, Jorge de Sena, Rodrigues Migueis, Sophia de Mello Bryner Andresen, Machado de Assis, Guimar?es Rosa, Clarice Lispector, Moacyr Scliar, Baltasar Lopes, Manuel Lopes, Yolanda Amarilis, Luandino Vieira, Luis Bernardo Honwana, Mia Couto, Onesimo Almeida, Jose Francisco Costa, and Katherine Vaz. The course will begin with a brief survey of short story theory since Edgar Allan Poe.

ChemEng Princp/Biological Syst

This course is intended to be an introduction to many core Chemical Engineering principles, within the context of mammalian cell biology and human physiology. We will cover biological topics of cell division, DNA, receptor-ligand binding, matrix protein assembly, tissue engineering, and cell motility, using a quantitative engineering perspective. Within this biological framework, students will learn the basic principles of mass and energy balances, thermodynamics, kinetics, and transport. (Gen.Ed. BS)

S-Advanced Costume Techniques

This class is designed for students who have both costuming and stitching experience and are interested in further exploring these skills. It is primarily a technical class focusing on cutting and stitching, dye techniques, and theatrical craft including millinery and/or mask making. Upon completion of this class, students will have completed a period garment, designed and executed a craft piece and compiled a mini portfolio of techniques and skills. This course is a prerequisite for Theater 593D (Draping and Patternmaking).

Begin Voice/Actor

Training of the actor's voice using a progression of psycho-physical exercises developed by Kristin Linklater. Emphasis on freeing the body and voice from habitual tensions and patterns. Prerequisites: THEATER 140, consent of instructor.

S-Science of Sleep

The primary goals of this course are to provide a basic introduction to the study of sleep; to provide a basic introduction to sleep disorders including their classification, cause and treatment and; perhaps most importantly, to answer "Why do we sleep?". We will seek scientifically informed answers to questions like: Why do we dream? Do animals sleep? And, what happens when we don't get enough sleep?
