The purpose of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge of practical experience with music technology used in musical notation-based and loops-based composition, and in various types of media productions. Skills developed in this course will position students to pursue further study as self-directed learners and within other courses in the humanities and fine arts.

FYS - How to Read Comic Books

Our contemporary world is increasingly dominated by visual images and one prominent example of this trend is the increasing popularity of comic books and graphic novels. They are not only taking up space in book stores and serving as the material for a number of successful film franchises, but comic books have also been appearing more frequently in the classroom.

FYS - OyeComoVa:Music&LitPR/

This course will feature music, short stories, and poetry created by Puerto Ricans of the diaspora (living off the island). We will discuss the various motivations authors and lyricists may have for choosing to use the language(s) they do, and the ways in which such choices help us understand negotiations of Latina/o identities in the U.S. more generally. Similarly, we will explore ways in which Salsa and Reggaeton music, for example, are both artistically and politically relevant, while examining the ways in which issues of race/racism are negotiated by musicians, artists, and writers.

FYS - Cannibalism:Art/Cultural

Cannibalism has been, at different times, a necessity, a medicinal fad, a part of our common ancestry, an act of respect, and a grievous taboo. This course will seek to briefly trace the fact of cannibalism through history, and then engage with what the idea of cannibalism has come to mean in different contexts and to different people.

FYS - Race in 21st Century Ame

A century ago WEB Du Bois wrote two of the most important books on race in the American canon (The Souls of Black Folk and The Gift of Black Folk). These works were, in part, pursuing a mission to educate white America on the realities of racism in our country. Du Boise's dream was that America would undergo a cultural evolution that would transform mainstream American society into one that was able to understand and appreciate the humanity of African Americans.

Arts Programming

Quality arts programming is at the core of all arts and culture organizations, yet many arts mangers struggle with how to present a program, once they have developed an idea. In this course, you will learn how to develop an arts programming philosophy and plan programs that connect the arts with audiences. The course will examine culturally specific and controversial programming, explore exemplary programs, and review technical and logistical support requirements.

Financial Managmnt in the Arts

Designed especially for those who are intimidated by or unfamiliar with financial concepts, this course will introduce you to developing a budget, as well as how to read and interpret financial statements, such as income statements, cash flow statements and balance sheets. Through discussion and hands-on exercises, you will explore ways of developing and sustaining fiscal responsibility throughout an organization, including the understanding of roles and responsibilities of the board of directors, management and staff.

Greening/Nonprofit Arts Org

The arts have long been leaders and mirrors of social change, daring to move forward where others will not tread. In this course we take a step-by-step approach to Green your nonprofit arts organization, build community excitement while cutting operating costs, find and create internal allies, find financial support, communicate a Green philosophy to donors and patrons, identify and make substantive change, and educate and lead our audiences toward a green future.

Introduction to Arts Managemnt

Arts Managers perform the work that is rquired to bring the arts and cultural programs to audiences, organizing programs such festivals and exhibits, performing arts events and film screenings. This course will introduce you to the "business of the arts," providing you with an overview of the careers in arts management, the types of work that arts managers do, and the current issues and trends now affecting arts management professionals.
