An introduction to French with an emphasis on acquiring a basic level of proficiency in the language and understanding of the culture of France and the Francophone world. Freshmen with one senior year of high school French with a grade of A or B or with two years of high school French are encouraged to enroll in FRENCHST 120 rather than this course.

Basic Writing

ENGLWRIT 111 (Basic Writing) is a college-level intensive reading and writing course designed to prepare students for ENGLWRIT 112. The course fulfills the General Education U.S. Diversity (U) requirement and focuses on the theme of cultural borders. Students produce essays incorporating course readings as well as their own personal experience and knowledge. All classes are held workshop-style in computer classrooms to allow for writing, collaboration, and consultation among students and between students and teacher. (Gen.Ed. U)

ENGLWRIT 111 (Basic Writing) is a college-level intensive reading and writing course designed to prepare students for ENGLWRIT 112. Students write five essays. This is the only course at UMass Amherst which satisfies the General Education College Writing (CW) requirement.
