Introduction to basic statistics including use and interpretation of statistics used in policy research. Topics include statistical methods, descriptive statistics, probability theory, analysis of tabular data, correlation and regression, and multiple regression.

Publc Polcy Analysis

Integrates material from core courses and applies it to actual and hypothetical policy issues in many areas. Examines policy analysis methods using case studies from a wide range of substantive policy areas. Looks at social, economic, organizational, political, and other influences on policy decisions.

S-CurrentLitigation/SocIssues

The capital "L" Law is the most conspicuous tool that government uses to exert control over the behavior of people and institutions. In spite of the authority of the government, the Law is never fully settled and, there is an ongoing struggle to configure the legal system. This is true especially along the conspicuous fault lines that we recognize as culture war issues. This course will examine those "hot button" topics and will drill down into what exactly is going on in real time as various factions attempt to shape the Law to their purposes.

S-Computers,Copyright&CrimLaw

This course examines how traditional ideas of crime, punishment, and justice square with the expansion of copyright law in an age of computers. It looks at how copyright expansion affects creators, consumers, and anyone who wants to communicate virtually. It examines computer law and its interfaces with copyright and criminal law through the lens of high-profile incidents, including the music industry's file sharing lawsuits, WikiLeaks, the Aaron Swartz case, and other current topics.

Law, Crime and Society

This course explores the interplay between law, crimes, and social institutions like the family, the state, and political economy. More broadly, Law, Crime, & Society is an introduction to the uses of theory in the social sciences and the ways in which it relates to the world beyond the classroom. This class shows students how to employ abstract concepts as tools for explaining contemporary real world situations, and pushes them to reflect on and synthesize the full arc of their undergraduate learning experience in preparation for the demands of life after the University.

Comparative Law & Society

This course examines the intersection of law, politics and society in a comparative perspective. The goal of the course is to familiarize you with the workings of the many and varied legal traditions and practices outside the United States. The course focuses on comparing commonalities and differences across legal contexts as well as the positives and negatives of doing law in different ways given those contexts.
