Food Microbiolgy Lab

Laboratory exercises emphasize quality control and experimental approaches to food microbiology. Labs teach basic culture methods, in addition to chemical, immunological, and molecular techniques employed for the microbiological analysis of foods. Prerequisites: MICROBIO 312 and concurrent registration in FOOD-SCI 567 or consent of instructor.

Honors Seminar 2: Topics

This seminar is a required course for Commonwealth Honors College students where students participate in a topical seminar-style course designed by its instructor. While the subject matter of each section is different, advanced knowledge of the topic is not required. While the subject matter of each section is different, the requirements for each section are the same.

Intro Stat/Comp An I

The purpose of this course is to give students in the social sciences and, in particular, education, skills in statistical reasoning so that they will be critical readers of research literature in their fields and in a position to design research studies and analyze data on their own.

The Solar System

Lecture: For nonscience majors. Introduction to the physical characteristics of the earth, moon, planets, asteroids and comets, their motions and gravitational interactions. Recent discoveries of space probes relative to formation of the solar system and origin of life.

Lab: Multiple sections. For nonscience students. Introduction to the night sky, telescopes, astronomical events, and celestial maps. Visual and telescopic observations of the constellations, moon, planets, stars, and other interesting astronomical objects. Attendance required.(Gen.Ed. PS)

Exploring the Universe

Lecture: For nonscience majors. Introductory survey of astronomy. How we learn about the Universe and what we already know of it, how it originated, evolves, and its ultimate fate. Emphasis on modern research in solar phenomena, stellar evolution (including white dwarfs, neutron stars, pulsars, and black holes) and galaxy studies (including quasars).

Senior Sem: Computer Studio

Students develop and complete individual semester-long projects of personal interest in preparation for B.F.A. Degree Project. Involves written component and weekly critiques. Prerequisites: at least five prior courses in area of specialization and all area core requirements. Required of all CPD area students in semester prior to B.F.A. Project.

Basic principles of physics illustrated by example and demonstration, whenever possible, from the biological sciences. Topics: electricity, magnetism, radiation, optics, relativity, quantum theory, atomic structure, nuclear physics. Prerequisite: PHYSICS 131/133 or equivalent. (Gen.Ed. PS)
