MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION

This course examines the multicultural approach in education, its roots in social protest movements and its role in educational reform. The course aims to develop an understanding of the key concepts, developments and controversies in the field of multicultural education; cultivate sensitivity to the experiences of diverse people in American society; explore alternative approaches for working with diverse students and their families; and develop a sound philosophical and pedagogical rationale for a multicultural education. This course has a community-based learning requirement.

THE AMER MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL

A study of the American secondary and middle school as a changing social institution. Provides an analysis of the history and sociology of this institution, modern school reform, curriculum development and contemporary problems of secondary education. Directed classroom observation. Not open to first-year students. Enrollment limited to 35.

ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY

A study of psychopathology and related issues. Course covers a broad range of mental and personality disorders. Recent clinical and experimental findings stressed, particularly as they relate to major conceptions of mental illness. Prerequisite: PSY 100

CLINICAL NEUROSCIENCE

Introduction to brain-behavior relations in humans and other species. An overview of anatomical, neural, hormonal and neurochemical bases of behavior in both normal and clinical uses. Major topics include the biological basis of sexual behavior, sleep, emotions, depression, schizophrenia, autism, ADHD and neurological disorders. The course focuses on clinical cases in neuroscience. Open to entering students.
