Approaches culture at various levels and in diverse areas subject to student interest, spanning such topics as globalization, intercultural conflict, civil religion, cultural movements, the media, and both cultural production and consumption.

Disasters result from sudden or slow incremental environmental changes, technological glitches, industrial negligence, chemical pollution, and willful acts of terror. Despite various sources of disasters, they all culminate in unmistakable massive changes for individuals, rural communities, and urban centers. While earlier understanding of disasters focused on the impact of "natural" disasters on the built environment and fatalities, more recent sociological theories and case studies of disasters have given more attention to the social causes and consequences of disaster.

An introduction to how social forces shape health throughout the lifecourse, with special focus on human development. Topics include social origins of disease, health disparities, the influence of peer and family relationships, how social forces interact with genetic background, neighborhood effects, and social status.

Basic issues in political sociology and politics: interaction between the political and social-cultural spheres, sources and manifestations of political inequality; variety of social conflict and its major theories; relationship between political ideas and political behavior. Issues of political violence and coercion, political propaganda and legitimation, intellectuals and political power.

The social causes of religion and religion's influence on social life. Topics include the definition of religion, fundamentalism, organized religion, private religion, world religions, religion and ethnic identity, religion and politics. (Gen.Ed. SB, U)

We will examine the major innovations and styles in journalism, including the historical context into which print fits, the arrival of press freedom, the invention of faster presses, the Penny Press of the 1840s, the story press period in the 1890s, and the Muckrakers, objective reporters, investigative journalists, the literary journalists of the 20th century and today, and the arrival of the Internet.
