ST- Machado de Asis

This seminar will explore the work of Machado de Assis (1839-1908) from his beginnings rooted in romanticism to his full development as the preeminent writer of fiction in Brazil, in many ways still unclassifiable and ahead of both his time and ours. We will read most of his novels, many short stories, some poems, his important critical essays, and key works about him. Readings in Portuguese; course conducted in Portuguese.

S-Argument,Conflict,Mediation

This course provides an introduction to argumentation theory and research with specific focus on communicative approaches (e.g., pragma-dialectics, conversational argument) and examines conflict in relation to language, processes of human interaction, and the rich settings where people conduct their lives. We will pay special attention to disagreement management in dispute mediation and study interventions to shape interaction from a communication design perspective.

ST-Video Production:Adv Topics

Each student will take the skills and insights gained in introductory production courses and develop them through the creation of one short project. Students may choose to work in narrative, documentary, experimental, or hybrid forms, first developing a script or proposal and then moving into production and post.

S-Fashion,Media,Culture,Style

This seminar examines fashion (and the aesthetics of the clothed body and projected identity) as a socio-cultural phenomenon represented in the media, film, art, and literature. This interdisciplinary and international overview of critical fashion studies will incorporate diverse texts, case studies, theoretical perspectives, analytical tools, and at least one field trip.

Senior Seminar I

A four credit honors seminar for senior STPEC students who have completed STPEC 391H with a grade of C or better. Seminar topic changes each semester. Fulfills the STPEC Senior Seminar requirement for STPEC students.

STPEC Core Seminar II

Second part of STPEC junior seminar sequence. Examines the social, historical and political conditions in which the 20th century took place. Contact department for details. Pre-requisite: Completion of STPEC 391H with a grade of C or better.

Talk in the Media

This course uses tools from the study of everyday interaction to explore one-on-one interactions in the electronic media. The course focuses on two genres in two different media: television news and call-in radio. Alongside theoretical studies, the course uses data sessions to analyze different television and radio segments. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BA-Comm majors.
