ST-Crypto Engineering

Cryptographic algorithms are the "engine" that drives virtually every security solution, from email encryption to biometric passports. This course will start with a review of the most important symmetric and public-key crypto algorithms. The focus on the course will then be on (1) the efficient implementation and (2) the secure implementation of cryptographic algorithms. Both pose considerable challenges. We will treat topics such as efficient arithmetic with very long numbers and side-channel attacks.

ST-Biorobotics

This seminar-style course focuses on robotic technology that replaces, works with, or functions as a biological system. The course will look at the physiology and movement of humans and other animals and its application in state-of-the-art robotic systems. In particular, this course will cover the sensors, actuators, and control structures used to develop these mechatronic devices. Topics include rehabilitation robotics, haptics, surgical devices, prostheses, orthoses, brain-machine interfaces and biomimetic devices.

ST-Global Cities&Global Issues

Cities are dynamic organisms whose inhabitants require food, water, shelter, safety, commerce, leadership, and equity. For most people, the city can be a wonderful place to live in. For persons without privilege, the necessary goods and services that are require for a quality life may be lacking. In this course, students will note that every village, town, city, or mega-city has some type of challenge. By examining cities within a global context, students should recognize that any challenge can also be viewed as an opportunity for implementing positive change.

Vietnam: Lit & Film

Focus on "images" of the war as presented in poetry, fiction, and film , often comparing the same image as it has been "rewritten" in literature and film. How images are manipulated by (re)writers to reinforce or subvert powerful cultural and political institutions. (Gen.Ed. AL,G)
