Media & Constructn of Gender

This Communication course draws on research and theory in communication, psychology, sociology, gender and cultural studies, education, and anthropology to examine how various forms of media shape our understandings of ourselves and others as gendered beings. We will discuss how media messages not only influence our behaviors, but also permeate our very senses of who we are from early childhood.

S-MarineMicrofossils&Paleocean

This seminar will focus on the Foraminifera (forams), although there will be context for other marine microfossil protists (siliceous and organic). Evolutionary and paleoecologic review of benthic and planktic forams. Key concepts and proxies based on microfossils used in paleoceanography will be discussed. Combination of lecture and discussion of key topical papers from the literature (driven by class input). Each student will present a topic of their interest related to forams (biology, ecology, paleoecology, and/or paleoceanography), or other microfossil group.

Senior Tutorial

Open to senior English majors who wish to pursue a self-defined project in reading and writing. Students intending to elect this course must submit to the Department a five-page description and rationale for the proposed independent study. Those who propose projects in fiction, verse, playwriting, or autobiography must submit a substantial sample of work in the appropriate mode; students wishing to undertake critical projects must include a tentative bibliography with their proposal.

Five College Studio

This course takes as its theme philosopher Donna Haraway's iconic phrases, "staying with the trouble." We live in a time of extraordinary, perhaps unprecedented complexity. Every day, we are confronted with realities of political and economic upheaval, planetary environmental crisis, new liberatory possibilities, massive inequalities and oppressions, technological transformation, and much more. What do we, as creative artists and thinkers, have to offer this moment?

Quantum Information Systems

Fundamentals of quantum information systems, including quantum computation and quantum cryptography. Topics include: quantum circuit model, qubits, unitary operators, measurement, entanglement, quantum algorithms for factoring and search, quantum key distribution, error-correction and fault-tolerance, complexity of quantum computation. This course counts as a CS Elective for the CS Major (BA or BS).

Independent Study

In this class, students will acquire hands-on and/or applied experience in diverse aspects of the research process in any field of Chemistry under the direction and supervision of a faculty advisor. Typically, these projects are related to the research program of the advisor. Student experiences often include: familiarizing themselves with a research topic, generating interesting questions, designing experiments, acquiring technical and instrumentation skills, collecting and analyzing data, writing and/or presenting their results.

Creative Leadership

A course in integrating previously studied skills, creative learning, and research, while developing collaborative leadership abilities in the making of theater and dance works. With permission of the department Chair, a student undertakes an integral production leadership responsibility on a semester-long project within the department’s production program. Such responsibilities may include stage management, production dramaturgy, associate directing or choreographing, or advanced design support.
