Africa in the News

Most people learn about Africa through the news. Yet media coverage of Africa often reads like a series of unmitigated disasters?stories of violence, poverty, and corruption. While these are real phenomena, they can only be understood through engagement with longer histories of capitalism, colonialism, and enslavement in Africa. This course will provide some of the historical context necessary to understand and interpret politics and society in contemporary Africa. Each unit will introduce a theme in contemporary African affairs and historicize it.
