College Writing

ENGLWRIT 112 (College Writing) is a first-year college-level writing course designed to help students expand their ability to write essays for academic, civic, and personal purposes and to develop their rhetorical awareness to write effectively in new social contexts. Based on the assumption that writing is a social activity, this course requires active engagement in the writing process, including pre-writing, peer review, revision, and editing. Students write five essays. This is the only course at UMass Amherst which satisfies the General Education College Writing (CW) requirement.

Introductory Biology Lab

This course is a 2 credit laboratory experience that allows students to apply the biological concepts covered in Biology 151 and 152 Introductory Biology in laboratory and field settings. Students will develop and practice scientific research skills while exploring the areas of genetics, cell and molecular biology, evolution, and ecology. To enroll, students must be co-enrolled in Biology 152 (Introductory Biology II) or have completed the 2 semester Introductory Biology Sequence (Biology 151 and 152).

This course is a 2 credit laboratory experience that allows students to apply the biological concepts covered in Biology 151 and 152 Introductory Biology in laboratory and field settings. Hort: Botany for Gardeners Lab

Practical lab experiences in plant propagation, morphology, development and physiology, soils, seeds, floral design, and an herbal apothecary. Use of the Lyman Conservatory, and winter and spring observation of outdoor plants are important components of the course. Course requirements include a lab journal and an extended field observation phenology project. Corequisite: BIO 122. Enrollment limited to 16.

What role have social constructions of gender played in shaping employment outcomes in the global economy? What has been the impact of these employment dynamics on gender relations? What strategies are available to increase wages, promote equal opportunity, fight discrimination in the workplace, and secure greater control over working hours and conditions?

Optimization

Mathematical optimization involves finding the best solution to a problem from a set of feasible solutions defined by mathematical constraints. It has an elegant theory and applications in fields like management, economics, engineering, and computer science that require decision making under constraints on time or other resources. We will begin by studying linear optimization, including duality, the simplex algorithm, and the geometry of linear programming. Other topics will include discrete optimization, network optimization, and nonlinear optimization.
