Purpose: An opportunity to discuss current state, national, and global issues and events with talented faculty, distinguished community members, politicians, and influential alums. Class time will be devoted to vibrant and challenging discussions based on critical reading and analysis of newspaper articles on current issues Requirements: Reading the front page stories from the New York Times and the Boston Globe daily. Supplemental reading as needed.

Elementary French I

An introduction to French with an emphasis on acquiring a basic level of proficiency in the language and understanding of the culture of France and the Francophone world. Freshmen with one senior year of high school French with a grade of A or B or with two years of high school French are encouraged to enroll in FRENCHST 120 rather than this course.

Veterinary Microbiology

A team-oriented microbiology laboratory course for skill development and discovery, focusing on the importance of microbes in animal health and disease, and laboratory exercises designed to encourage students to develop and test hypotheses then think critically about their observations.

ST-Biotech Research Exper I

An independent biotechnology research experience in a UMass laboratory. Basic cell and molecular biology techniques including cell culture, media preparation, solution preparation, PCR and Western blot will be taught. This class satisfies the first requirement of the Biotechnology Research Experience series for the BS Animal Science Biotechnology Concentration.

ST-NonlinearDynmcs-CurrentPers

This course focuses on concepts and current developments in nonlinear dynamics and complex systems approaches in biology. The aim is to further understanding of the significance of these nonlinear concepts and analysis tools for movement coordination and perception. Topics to be discussed will be basic concepts of nonlinear dynamics, analysis tools related to assessing movement coordination, and linear and nonlinear tools for time series analysis.

International Education

This course is designed to introduce students to the role of culture in education. After exploring the theoretical basis of culture, and its relationship to education, students will be exposed to a range of cultural perspectives from Africa, Asia and Latin America. (Gen.Ed. SB, G)

Digital Forensics

This course offers a broad introduction to the forensic investigation of digital devices. We cover the preservation, recovery, harvesting, and courtroom presentation of information from file systems, operating systems, networks, database systems applications, media files, and embedded systems. The primary goal of the class is to understand why and from where information is recoverable in these systems. We also cover relevant issues from criminology, law, and the study of privacy.
