ST-Law in Action

This course will examine how lawyers, social activists, and everyday people have used litigation to change the social and legal landscape in the post-war United States. Through reading numerous in-depth case studies of seminal civil and criminal cases, we will explore such questions as: How and why have social movements used "the law" to advance their causes? What are the pros and cons of using litigation to achieve social change (or right a wrong), versus other tools such as direct action, lobbying, and community organizing?

ST-Finnish I

Finnish I is the first part of a four-part elementary course sequence in Finnish. The course is offered through the Five College Supervised Independent Language Program. The independent study format includes small group conversation sessions and an evaluation by an outside evaluator. Students studying Finnish develop speaking and listening skills needed for study abroad in Finland and to support course work in European Studies and Scandinavian Studies.

ST-Race and Sport

Race and Sport investigates how racial and gender formation degraded, defamed and denied women and people of color the opportunity to participate in sport. The course will recognize the important milestones overcome and those yet to be broken. This course puts a premium on students being able to critically analyze the institution of sport.

Art of Critical Ethnography

This course will familiarize students with the basics of conducting quality ethnographic research from a critical perspective. We will begin with one reality of our times: New media technologies offer research subjects increased access to the tools necessary for ethnographic representation of the self and communities. This means the ethnographer no longer has a monopoly on particular forms of power- namely the tools of representation and access to the technologies needed to circulate her representations of herself, "Others", institutions, or culture in general.

From the Classroom to the Cell

The United States of America incarcerates more youth than any other country in the world. What role does education play in this phenomenon? This course explores the socio-educational factors at the heart of the school to prison pipeline, a term for the disturbing trend in which punitive policies have led to youth being funneled out of schools and into the criminal justice system at an alarming rate.

Lighting Design

An introduction to the theory and techniques of theatrical lighting, with emphasis on the aesthetic and practical aspects of the field as well as the principles of light and color.


Requisite: THDA 112 or consent of the instructor. Lab work in lighting technology.  Fall semester. Resident Lighting Designer Couch.
