Codes, Ciphers, Hackers & Crac

This course offers a practical introduction to and reviews the history of codes and ciphers, from medieval allegories to the Vernam Cipher. In order to break codes, it examines the structures of the English language, as well as the distributive characteristics of words and phonemes. Students will examine the relationship between a system and its component elements. Starting with the relationship between letters and cipher types, we will move to the relationship between users and networks, writers and literary markets, and to the larger cultural issues of hackers (and crackers) and The System.

ST-Longform Narrative

Due to the increasingly powerful presence of Internet venues such as Byliner, the long-form narrative is once again receiving the shine it should as a vehicle for thoroughly researched and compellingly presented journalism. Students will read classics in the genre and then try their hand at a major piece of writing in the tradition of practitioners such as Katherine Boo, John Hersey, Marjorie Williams, Truman Capote, Tracy Kidder, and Joan Didion among others.

S-Travel Writing

From excursions far into the jungles of South America to a 48-hour exploration of local art and cuisine, good travel journalism brings the world into our living rooms. Travel journalism provides inspiration for adventures yet to come and opens readers' eyes to the many wonders that local and foreign destinations have to offer. It requires reporters to bring a journalist's critical eye for observation and a storyteller's flair to bring different locales to life.

The unity and most of the qualities assigned to the Third World have also been largely Western. In this course we will examine the ways in which the Third World is represented by Western media. And using an anthropological and political economy approach we will deconstruct the propaganda used to continue the imbalance in the flow of information between the West and the Third World.
